Interesting facts about UK roads

Where would be without our vast road network? Well, we would definitely be less mobile and we would be more reliant on local products and services than we perhaps are now. Our roads are hives of activity with hundreds and thousands of vehicles travelling around each day.   • The Ridgeway which runs from Wiltshire to Berkshire is the oldest road in the UK. It dates back to over 5,000 years ago. It was a trade route in the past and it wasn’t until 1902 that the first section in Nottingham was tarmaced.

  • The first motorway built in the UK was the M6 Preston Bypass that covered a total of 8 miles and was opened in 1958. It is the M6 that is now the longest motorway in the country. It covers a staggering 236 miles and reaches from Catthorpe in Leicestershire to the edge of the Scottish Border.
