So, what are some of the things that a receptionist in a doctor’s surgery have to do? One of the most obvious skills that a medical receptionist needs is a good telephone manner. As well as using the phone to answer calls from patients, they will also need to use it to contact suppliers and to arrange things like locum insurance.

As well as using the telephone a lot, a receptionist at a doctor’s surgery will also be expected to maintain and update a filing system. This is a particularly important job because not only will it contain a lot of customer details that are of a highly personal and confidential nature, but it is also to ensure that information such as test results are returned correctly and rapidly, and all medical details are logged.
