An introduction to green energy

Green energy – not to be confused with renewable energy – is completely renewable but also produces zero pollution. Green energy involves no element which is harmful to the environment, such as mining, deforestation, or drilling.

The UK is aiming to reach net zero by 2050. Targets have been set by the government that all energy providers must see their electricity derived from 100% zero-carbon sources by 2035.
Types of Green Energy

Solar power comes from the sun which is able to provide a virtually infinite amount of energy. This is converted into usable power by photovoltaic panels which harvest energy from the sun’s light and use it to create an electrical current. This is then channelled into your home using an inverter.

Wind can be captured by wind turbines as it moves across the earth and is then converted into energy. The spinning blades of the wind turbine move an internal rotor, which spins to produce power.

Flowing water contains energy, and hydroelectric power is produced from water flowing through a narrow path. It is then stored in a reservoir and let out in small amounts. Storing water at high levels causes gravity to pull it down at an accelerated speed. This causes water to spin a turbine and activate an electrical generator.

Biogas is where energy is produced from our waste products. Storing them without oxygen allows them to ferment and then release methane. Methane can be used to heat homes and as a fertiliser.

Solar Panels

Solar panels Gloucester are an effective and cost-efficient way of providing energy for those commercial and domestic properties which are interested in reducing their energy bills and contributing to a greener environment. By harnessing the natural energy of the sun, an infinite supply of power is available, free from any adverse effects on the environment.

Green energy sources, such as solar panels in Gloucester and elsewhere, provide a return on investment with the reduction of energy bills alone and also contribute to a strong sense of social responsibility.
